…Directs immediate deployment of ESTMA staff on Enugu urban roads to manage traffic

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and some South East Leaders on Friday visited the survivors of the school children from Awgu Local Government Area, who were involved in the Ghastly motor accident that occurred in the council area.

It will be recalled that no fewer than 21 persons including schoolchildren, were reported (Not FirstNews) to have been crushed to death in Agwu, Enugu State, on their way from school.

The pupils were of the Presentation Nursery and Primary School, Awgu, operated by the Catholic Diocese of Awgu, Enugu State.

They were crushed when a truck belonging to a construction firm rammed into the school bus when it failed break.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident and attributed it to a mechanical fault.

Gov Ugwuanyi who had earlier expressed the deepest commiserations of the state government to the families of the school children from Awgu Local Government Area, led South East leaders after their two days meeting in Enugu to empathize with the pupils of Presentation Nursery and Primary School, Awgu Local Government Area and other victims, who were involved in the recent road accident.

The prominent South East leaders who joined the governor on the visit were the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo; the Deputy Minority Leader and member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Toby Okechukwu; Member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, Hon. Cornelius Nnaji; Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Amb. Lawrence Agubuzu; wife of the former Premier of the Eastern Region and Nigeria’s first President, late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Prof Uche Azikiwe; leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), former Minister of Women Affairs, Chief Mrs. Josephine Anenih, Enugu State youth and student leaders, among others, to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku/Ozalla.

Gov. Ugwuanyi, who wished the school children and other victims quick recovery, consoled the parents of the kids to have faith in God as his administration will do anything possible to ensure that they fully recover.

The governor therefore announced that the state government will take care of all their medical bills to any level and urged the management of the hospital to give the victims adequate medical attention.

Other personalities who accompanied the governor were the Chief Whip of Enugu State House of Assembly and member representing Awgu North Constituency, Hon. Mrs. Jane Eneh, the Chairman of Awgu LGA, Hon. Pedro Nwankwo, the founding Director of Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL), Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, etc.

In another development, Gov. Ugwuanyi also directed the immediate deployment of the staff of the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA) to manage traffic in Enugu Capital Territory.

There has been traffic gridlock in the state capital as a result of the last week’s untoward actions of hoodlums and miscreants who hijacked the #EndSARS protests to cause mayhem and destroy both public and private properties, including the traffic lights.

Conveying the governor’s directive, the Information Commissioner disclosed that “His Excellency has directed the Honourbale Commissioner, Enugu State Ministry of Transport to forthwith deploy all staff of the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA) to all the major roads within the Enugu Capital Territory to ensure free and orderly flow of traffic”.

The directive, according to Aroh, “is to ensure immediate restoration of normalcy in the traffic situation in the Capital Territory, which has become chaotic since the unfortunate disruption of activities by miscreants and hoodlums who hijacked the otherwise peaceful #ENDSARS Protests”.

“The good people of Enugu State and indeed all road users are therefore urged to cooperate with the staff of the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA)”, he said.
