An extra-time goal by Mario Mandzukic handed Croatia a hard-fought victory over England and a spot in the 2018 World Cup final.
Kieran Trippier had given England a dream start in the Luzhniki Stadium by curling in a free-kick past the despairing dive of Danijel Subasic in just the fifth minute.
But Ivan Perisic levelled for Croatia in the 68th minute, nipping ahead of Kyle Walker to steer home Sime Vrsaljko’s cross past a diving Jordan Pickford.
Although Croatia bossed possession throughout the tie, neither side could find a second goal, allowing the clash to creep into extra-time.
With the game looking like it might end up with a penalty shootout, Madzukic gave Croatia the lead and eventual winner in the 109th minute.
