The Honourable Member Representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South at Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Dr. Pat Asadu, on Sunday flagged off the hosting of a football competition for the youths of Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South Local Government Areas in order to discover youths with football skills and equally draw support for the Governor of Enugu State His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Hon. Asadu who spoke with newsmen shortly after kicking off the football to commence the tournament, said that the competition which is for youths under his federal constituency, maintained that it was aimed at helping the governor in the area of human capital development of the youths from his constituency and equally draw support for the Governor’s re-election in 2019 so as to continue the good works he was doing in the state.
The Lawmaker who is the chief sponsor of the competition, has the support of the two People’s Democratic Party standard bearers for the Nov. 4 Local Government Elections in Enugu State, Hon. Dr. Fidelis Odo, Igbo-Eze South and Chief Pat Omeje, Nsukka respectively.
While urging the youths of Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency to take advantage of the programme to showcase their talents in football, said that good players that will be discovered would be supported to feature in the national team and international clubs respectively.
“Just like we trained over 100 youths on different trades across Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South federal constituency recently and empowered them with seed money to startup any business of their choice, we are giving the same opportunity to youths who have the football skills to participate in this competition so that they can showcase their talents for possible discovery.
“Whoever we discover as a star, it will be our responsibility to nurture him to some height where he can be sort for by clubs within the country and international clubs. It is not acceptable that a people with a university like the University of Nigeria, Nsukka do not have many players at the national team, rangers or notable clubs outside the
“So what we are doing is investing in the future using what God has giving us hoping to realize the best talents that can be exported and take them to the next level. So working with my brothers the two local government chairmanship standard bearers of PDP in the forthcoming council elections in the state, Dr. Odo and Chief Omeje, we decided to keep
the youths busy instead of allowing them to be idle and become devils workshop.
“Eventually, whichever team/ward that will win the cup will get a huge amount of money but what is more important for us as the sponsors are to discover as many talents as possible.”
Speaking also, Dr. Odo said that the programme would go a long way to bring together some kind of intimacy that will internalize the ideals of Gburugburu brand and equally expose them as it regards foot-balling whereby majority of them will be opportune to leave the shores of this country to other countries of the world to make a better career in football.
“It is not a good one that in Enugu North Senatorial Zone we cannot boast of a handful of players at the national and international football. Among these youths that have come to partake in this exercise, you can find all the names we celebrate in both in local and international clubs.
“So it is our hope that as we progress, it is going to be on record that this was where we discovered the players that will govern football in the future.” He said.
